FAQ

  1. Can I apply to the program as a psychology major? Unfortunately, the New York State Department of Education does not consider psychology an area of science certification. It does not matter how much science content may have been taught in the psychology course. You must have a minimum of 36 credits in science of which 30 credits must be in one science discipline (biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science).
  2. Why does the Secondary Science Education Program at Queens College require so many exams and workshops for certification? The agency that requires the licensure tests is the New York State Department of Education. Queens College and all other colleges in New York State are required to adhere to New York State laws.
  3. Do I really have to complete two semesters of student teaching? Simply stated, yes. The science education programs that lead to initial certification are clinically-rich programs which require two semesters of student teaching. In general, all candidates will have a placement in a middle school (grades 7-9) and a second placement in a high school (9-12 governed by science content certification area).
  4. Are internships possible? The conditions for internships are specific and are addressed on an individual basis. In general, candidates who are already in a teaching assignment that matches their area of certification may be considered for an internship. Candidates who have completed one full semester of student teaching may also be considered for an internship provided they have a signed contract from a New York City or New York State public school.
