Student Teaching II Requirements (Spring semester)

The science education program is a clinically-rich experience and all candidates are required to complete two semesters of student teaching. In general, the first semester’s experience is in a middle school and the second semester’s experience is in a high school.

Undergraduate science teacher candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 in their science major to enroll in SEYS 372.4. They must have completed the following SEYS courses: 382 and 372.2 with a minimum Grade of a B in each course and have an overall GPA of 3.0 and have completed the safety courses and uploaded their certificates of completion to Chalk&Wire.  A minimum of 30 credits of the science major must be completed before 372.4.

Similarly, Post-Baccalaureate Advanced Certificate or MAT candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major to enroll in SEYS 372.4 and must have completed the following SEYS courses: 382 and 372.2 with a minimum Grade of a B in each course and have an overall GPA of 3.0 and have completed the safety courses and uploaded their certificates of completion to Chalk&Wire.  A minimum of 30 credits of the science major must be completed before 372.4.

Candidates will work under the mentorship of a cooperating teacher for a minimum of six periods per day, five days per week throughout the semester. During the semester, science teacher candidate will be observed at least four times by an experienced science education supervisor. Observations will focus on student teachers’ instructional planning and implementation, teaching skills, classroom management, interaction with students and teachers, overall disposition and professional growth during the two semester placement period.
